Michael Waltrip Racing Asks Businesses to Support Recent Town Actions

UPDATE:

Aquesta Bank and Lake Norman Infiniti have also signed on!

We just received the following statement from Michael Waltrip Racing:

Interstate 77 is the critical transportation artery for the Lake Norman region. Our employees, customers and suppliers depend on this road every day. As our region grows the congestion on this road continues to worsen, affecting our business and quality of life.

Adding capacity to this stretch of interstate is imperative. But it’s equally imperative we do this the right way. We’re concerned the current proposal to widen I-77 with private toll lanes under a 50 year contract may not be the right way.

We’re concerned the contract’s non-compete clause precludes widening I-77 with anything but more toll lanes for the next 50 years.

We’re concerned the private company wants high congestion in the free lanes so they can charge steep tolls. Those steep tolls will take money out of our local economy that would otherwise be spent on local businesses. They will burden our employees who will either sit in traffic or pay dearly to avoid it.

We’re concerned the toll lane access points will bypass our local businesses and hospitals.

We have one chance to get this right or live with the consequences for 50 years. That’s why the businesses by signing below signify their support of the recent actions of the Cornelius, Huntersville and Davidson town boards and Mooresville Mayor Miles Atkins calling for an independent review of the contract. Interstate 77 is too important to our community to do otherwise.
