Like bones, skin often becomes more fragile with age. It may look more delicate and prone to tears and irritation than before. Also, the skin feels drier and itchier.

“Many factors, including collagen loss, changes in blood vessels, sun exposure and medications, combine to affect how well the skin works,” says Sarina Elmariah, MD, Ph.D., dermatologist. at the General Hospital of Massachusetts in Boston.

Keeping your skin healthy is important, as it acts as a barrier between your body and all the potential harms of the outside world. The correct treatment of your skin can reinforce this barrier, at any age. And taking some smart steps can make a big difference when it comes to anti-aging skin care. This is what you should do.

What is causing those changes in the skin?

Your skin is composed of several layers. Each one becomes thinner with the passage of time. All layers contain collagen, the protein that provides structure and keeps skin thick and firm.

With age and sun exposure, collagen production decreases, often causing sagging, wrinkling and slower recovery. In fact, wounds can last up to 4 times longer in older adults than in younger people.

In addition to the forces of aging and the environment, several other factors can contribute to the thinning of the skin. Menopause can make it harder for the skin to retain moisture, leaving it almost like paper. Many common medications can also thin the skin or make it more easily injured, including oral steroids (such as prednisone), topical steroids (such as hydrocortisone), and some blood thinners (including aspirin).

The skin not only becomes thinner with age; It also becomes drier. Up to 85% of older adults have extremely dry skin (known as xerosis).

But it is not inevitable: when the outermost layer of the skin works in the best way, it maintains moisture and protects the skin from external aggressions (such as chemicals, smoke, and other irritants). Improving the strength of this layer will help your skin feel less dry and irritated and look better.

Update your skincare habits

“Caring for your skin properly becomes even more important as you get older,” says Shari Lipner, MD, Ph.D., a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. “And that may mean changing some of your products and skin care habits.”

Waiver of long, hot showers and baths; Both can dry and irritate the skin, especially during cold and dry weather. “Limit your showers and baths to 5 or 10 minutes in warm water, not hot,” says Elmariah.

You will also want to re-evaluate some of the products in your bathroom. Get rid of any hard exfoliator, for example. If you want to exfoliate dead, dry skin, try rubbing a soft wipe over damp skin, suggests David E. Bank, MD, director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, NY

Look for a mild soap, bar or liquid, that has no fragrance, since fragrances can irritate sensitive skin and dry it. And as soon as you dry with the towel, be sure to moisturize your skin from head to toe.

“If you apply moisturizer to your still-damp skin, it helps you maintain moisture,” says Lipner. The creams are richer and more moisturizing than the lotions; Ointments (such as Vaseline) are better for sealing the barrier and retaining water.

A review of 33 studies, published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2013, found that a combination of ingredients that retain moisture in the skin (such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and lactic acid) and those that contain fatty ingredients to soften it (Such as cocoa butter, lanolin and petrolatum are better for improving dryness and reinforcing this critical barrier.) The best skin care strategy uses ingredients from both groups.

Caring for wounds in the right way

Thin and fragile skin is more prone to cuts and scrapes than healthy skin. But beware of adhesive bandages, which can irritate or cut the skin, says Bank. Look for labels that say “sensitive skin” (delicate skin) or cover the wound with non-stick gauze and use paper tape or an elastic wrap (like an Ace bandage) to hold it in place.

In people with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and some other health problems, the wounds can become chronic, usually defined as not healing in 3 months. Talk to your doctor if a cut is not healing normally.
