How do infrared saunas work?

Unlike steam saunas, the heat in this type of saunas is generated by an electrical resistance that gives off infrared rays that penetrate our body directly, without steam or heat. These rays are totally safe for health.

The feeling you have when using an infrared sauna is very similar to what you have in direct contact with the sun.  Heat and sweat are generated, but the heat is direct, it does not expand through the interior as steam does.

In infrared saunas, the temperature is more moderate: it usually oscillates between 35 and 50ºC. For this reason, the recommended use of time is somewhat higher: the ideal is to use the sauna between 30 and 45 minutes.

What other differences do they present?

Perhaps the most noticeable additional difference between infrared saunas vs steam saunas is that infrared saunas are somewhat more practical when it comes to adapting to domestic use.

The energy consumption of this type of sauna is very low, the equivalent of a microwave. And you can also connect without problem to the standard current through a 220v socket. It is as simple as buying the sauna, installing it, connecting it to the current and start enjoying it. For their part, steam saunas also adapt quite well to domestic use, although it must be borne in mind that they require more electrical power.

They also spend a little more. To warm up, you have to turn them on for 45 minutes before using them, so that your energy consumption is not limited to the precise moment of use.

What benefits can be obtained from saunas?

To finish, let’s review the main benefits you can get from a sauna, either infrared or steam:

  • Relief of muscle and bone pain: if you are a great athlete and you need your muscles to recover periodically, or if you suffer from joint or muscle pain due to ailments such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or muscle spasms, using a sauna regularly is a great idea.

The saunas dilate the blood vessels and facilitate the circulation of blood. Therefore, they oxygenate the muscles and joints better, allowing them to recover and relax more quickly. By oxygenating the whole body better, they produce a pleasant sensation of relaxation and well-being.

  • Elimination of toxins: the sweat generated when using the sauna allows the elimination of very harmful toxins, such as heavy metals, cholesterol or nicotine. By favoring blood circulation, it also prevents fat from depositing in your arteries, preventing arteriosclerosis, and also in reserve areas such as the buttocks or belly, helping you to fight cellulite.
  • Improvement of the immune system: when the body temperature increases, the saunas provoke a kind of artificial fever that helps to strengthen the immune system.

In Polaris, you will find both types of sauna in easy-to-assemble kits.  And you can decide if you install your sauna yourself at home or if you hire our installation service when you buy your sauna.

We hope to have clarified your doubts regarding the differences between infrared saunas vs steam saunas. Both are, without a doubt, an excellent acquisition if you are looking for a sauna for domestic use that is easily adaptable to your pace of life and that offers a multitude of benefits at a reasonable cost.
