Guide to buy water bottles

It is likely that your bottle will accompany you for years, so it is important to make the right decision.

Use – As in, how will you use it? Will you take it to the office or will you use it mainly for weekend excursions? Do you want a bottle that you can run with? Or do you spend most of your career on the treadmill in the gym?

If you are going to use it strictly for hard hydration during CrossFit, it does not matter much what the bottle looks like. It only has to contain a lot of water. On the other hand, if you’re making it part of your office kit, you’ll want something colorful and light.

Material – Most reusable water bottles are made of plastic and plastic has a lot going for it. It is durable, it usually does not break if dropped and is affordable. However, if you never really acquired a taste for drinking plastic, you may want to go with glass, although you may not want to carry your glass bottle running. If it is important to keep the water cold, it is important that you have a stainless steel bottle with double vacuum-sealed lining, such as the Yeti.

Size and shape – The higher the volume, the heavier the bottle will be, both empty and full. So, if you want a bottle, you can take a walk around Central Park or Castle Island in Boston and probably want to limit it to 22 ounces. However, if your water bottle is going to spend a lot of time on your desk, you can increase the volume to your liking. As for the form, you will want something that is easy to sustain if you are taking it along the trail or track. Something like the Thermos Intak 24.

The lid – The lid is important because it is the portal through which you interact with your drink. You do not want a wide mouth like that in the Nalgene Tritan if you’re running, but that would be fine for water breaks on the trail. If you need to rehydrate in motion, you’ll want something with a straw-type mouthpiece or a bite-and-sip valve like the Camelbak Eddy. For use in the office, you will not need more than a standard screw cap.

Why a bottle of water?

If you are one of those who keeps the small plastic bottle that you buy in the store, then use it in the office or take it to the gym, we must tell you that this habit is not entirely healthy. The chemical components contained in plastic bottles are harmful to health.

What effects does BPA have on our body? It has the ability to alter the endocrine system. Some studies relate it to problems such as diabetes, obesity, infertility and even some types of cancer. There are even many movements and campaigns that promote the withdrawal of BPA in food packaging and even in household appliances.

The idea is to buy bottles that we can fill, and under no circumstances fill the plastic bottles of bottled water because even though we do not perceive it, they are degraded making the materials, such as BPA, can migrate to the content.

To consider

So, if we can not use the bottle we have bought to fill, how do we transport the water we want to drink, without comparing a new bottle in each use? Simple there are other types of materials that we can use, including plastic, as long as it is free of BPA.

The Tritan is a type of BPA free plastic, resistant, hard and at the same time light and transparent. The plastic offers us a variety of designs, it is less expensive, we can freeze water inside. The disadvantage is that even though they are from Tritan, the bottles are less durable, they need a periodic replacement and that their production is not very sustainable.

The bottles in addition to closing safely must have an opening that allows its filling and we can drink. Some bottles allow quick access to a peak that can even be opened with the mouth, while others allow unscrewing the upper part to drink through an opening or completely unscrewing the lid that serves as a glass. If you prefer to use a sorbet there are models that allow you to expose the sorbet to drink and then hide it for storage. Whatever the system, the important thing is that it allows us a good flow of water and avoid spills when drinking.
