10 Best First Aid Kit Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

First, permit me to share a few words on my relationship with the first aid kit. I keep a stocked first aid kit in both of our cars, in the home, at the ready for travel, and packed and ready to go with my hiking gear. I also have a few bandages tucked into my wallet. Now, I’m not a disaster prepper or anything like that. In fact, I’m pretty confident that society will be just fine in the long run, and I’d generally recommend people spend more time managing their retirement portfolio than stocking their fallout shelters.

How to choose the right first aid kit for you

A good first aid kit isn’t a mobile trauma center, but it will provide the basic supplies you need to mitigate the ill effects of an accident, injury, or sudden illness. Remember, it’s first aid, not final, comprehensive aid. When choosing a first aid kit, you need to think about who might depend on it (in terms of the sheer number of people and the age and disposition of the user), where it will be stored and/or carried, and in what situations the likely users might endure an injury or illness.

Any first aid kit worth considering will have the supplies needed to treat minor cuts, punctures, burns, and other such common injuries. Beyond that, the suitability of a given kit depends on careful consideration of factors ranging from weight to packaging to redundancy of the supplies included. You know where you’ll be when you might need first aid and/or who might be depending on your help.

What to Look for in a First Aid Kit

TYPICAL CONDITIONS When deciding which first aid kit is right for you, think about the places you typically travel. For example, you’ll likely want Band-Aids, gauze, and pain meds no matter what, but if you plan on venturing to places known for questionable food handling, be sure the kit includes anti-nausea medication. Those heading deeper into the wild should consider one that has burn treatments, splint kits, eye-flushing fluid, and more. If you’re backpacking, kits nestled in waterproof bags (or those that cater to sport-related injuries like blisters) add another layer of reliability.

WEIGHT AND SIZE Size and weight matter in the world of modern travel. For air-bound trips, look for a kit that can compress nicely and pack easily in your checked luggage (most first-aid kits will have to be checked). But if you’re road-tripping or going on a vacation where space isn’t an issue, feel free to over-prepare.

APPLICATIONS BEYOND TRAVEL If you want a kit that works in a variety of situations, cast your net wide when evaluating features. If a go-to kit in an emergency is your goal, look for ones that include things like cold packs, sanitized water, and infectious waste bags. If you’re just looking to stash your kit in your basement or in the trunk of your car, a more basic model might work best.

The All-Important First Aid Kit

Daily life often brings its share of minor scrapes, burns, puncture wounds, or bug bites. We take most of these small injuries for granted and tend to them as needed, cleaning cuts or scuffs with antiseptic and/or alcohol wipes, managing insect stings with anti-itch ointments, and dressing the afflicted areas with a bandage or with some gauze and medical tape.

That is, we respond in stride if we have access to a decent first aid kit. The fact is that far too many homes, offices, and even some schools and daycare centers are without proper first aid supplies. According to a national survey conducted in recent years, nearly half of the households in America do not have a first aid kit.

Other Medical/Emergency Items To Have On Hand

As made clear, keeping a first aid kit in the home, vehicle, and/or office should not be considered intelligent, it should be considered imperative. But while a basic first aid package can help mitigate many medical issues, it is nonetheless a baseline from which to start your response to an injury or emergency; there is plenty of additional gear that can help you help yourself, your coworkers, or your friends and family members.
