10 Best Riding Mower Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Riding mowers are generally the way to go for lawns of half an acre or more. And your options fall into one of three broad categories.

There are rear-engine riders, which are the smallest and are usually built with a 30-inch cutting deck. They also tend to be cheapest and are a smart choice if you have limited storage space. Traditional lawn tractors feature a 42-inch cutting deck and typically top out around 4 to 5 mph. They also tend to be more stable than zero-turn-radius (ZTR) mowers on hills.

Mini rider Or Tractor Mower?

The main difference between a mini rider and a tractor is that the latter has a prominent front hood. This implies a situation different from the motor and the cutting system.

  • Mini rider

The mini rider, also called rider tractor, is of more contained dimensions, therefore, it has a smaller cutting width (between 60 and 77 cm.) And is more manageable. Its engine, as a rule, is less powerful and are designed for garden surfaces with fewer square meters of grass (up to a maximum of 2,500 m2). They have a single cutting blade and the user sits in a seat on top of the engine and the cutting mechanism itself.

The majority of the mini rider are specific to mulching, that is, they have a lateral deflector or a rear exit where they expel the crushed grass into very small pieces that will serve as nutrients to the lawn itself, keeping the moisture in the soil longer. They can also be collectors, that is, they can carry a collection basket on their backside. In this case, the rider minitractors push the grass cut by a tube that is between the wheels or through the external lateral exit.

  • Powered Tractor

The lawnmower tractor is one size larger than the mini rider, therefore, it’s cutting width can be higher (between 76 and 132 cm.). Due to their size, their weight is higher, so they need more powerful engines (and more consumption), it is true that having a wider cut, need fewer passes to cut the same surface.

They can have up to three cutting blades, beside exit (specific for mulching) or rear exit (collectors but can also mulch with a tool very easy to attach). Depending on the motor and the cutting width, they are valid to perform their function on surfaces of up to more than 10,000 square meters.

Lateral Exit Or Rear Exit?

It is proven that the “mulching” is very good to avoid the evaporation of water from the soil and therefore, keep our grass hydrated without using so much watering. In addition, there is no need to think about what to do with the cut grass, since it ends up decomposing and serving as a nutrient for the lawn itself. When the grass cut by our tractor is crushed, these remains will not be appreciated in the garden.

Mulching is directly related to the side exit of our mini rider or our lawn mower. Almost all tractors with this type of output have been designed to perform this technique. That does not mean that they are not collectors, but for that they have designed the rear exit, since they send directly with the force of the wind generated by the blade or blades, the grass to the basket in a much shorter distance, without that there are problems of jams by wet grass, etc.

Mechanical, Automatic Or Hydrostatic Mower Tractor?

Whether it is a mini rider tractor or a lawnmower tractor, we must decide what type of change we are most interested in for the utility that we are going to give it.

  • The MECHANICAL change is the one that takes more time in the market, therefore, it has a lot of reliability and is the most economical. The tractor or minirider has a level where the speed we want to go to is selected. It should be noted that the higher the speed, the less force to climb slopes. The drawback is that if we want to change gear or move backward, we must stop completely. And beware, some tractors, most have a system that shuts off the engine if we introduce reverse gear without disconnecting the cutting plate.
  • The AUTOMATIC change is basically a mechanical change, but it allows to vary the running speed without having to stop the machine completely. It can also be called transmural or auto drive transmissions.
  • The HYDROSTATIC change is the most professional but at the same time the most complex and the one that has more maintenance, since it is the oil that circulates under pressure by the pinions driven by a hydraulic pump. Its great advantage is that it drives like an automatic car, stepping on an accelerator to have more or less speed.
