10 Best Winter Gloves Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

You would think that finding a good pair of winter gloves is easy, especially with the wide selection available. When you get into it, however, you tend to notice that even among gloves in the same price range, some are definitely better made than others. We’re talking here about stitching, proportions, elasticity, padding, and every other minute detail that one should look for when browsing for a pair of winter gloves.

Now, with the sheer selection available nowadays, you wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to find a good pair of winter gloves, and yet the wide variety represents part of the problem. This is because it allows sub-standard manufacturers to crowd the market with sub-par gloves, the type that is neither comfortable, durable, or insulating.

Winter Gloves Buying Guide

Whether you are working, skiing, snowboarding or just playing in the snow with your family, keeping your hands warm and snug would definitely make a positive difference. Although gloves are not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of winter, they’re just as important as any other piece of winter apparel. In order for you to keep your hands warm and comfortable and be able to use them effectively in cold weather, there are a few things you need to know before making any sort of purchase.

Construction

Upper Cover: Known as the back of the glove, this area is usually thicker than the other parts. This is to ensure you get optimum protection from the cold winds. Bear in mind that some gloves may come with a water-resistant membrane under the upper cover.

  • Palm: Winter gloves are usually designed with thicker palms with a textured surface to enhance the amount of grip.
  • Fingers: Some winter gloves come with rubber coated fingers to add to the amount of grip while some come designed with touch-friendly tips enabling the use of a smartphone even with the gloves on. The type of finger-style you choose depends mainly on personal preference and personal/professional requirements.
  • Wrist Band: The part that goes around your wrist should always be firm and tight enough to keep out dirt and snow. Most gloves come with an adjustable wristband that can be tightened depending on your comfort level, however, it is important to choose a glove that offers durability – in the sense that the strap should be strong above everything else.

Types of Winter Gloves

Although they serve a generic purpose, winter gloves tend to differ ever so slightly in regards to how they’re built and how well they fit for various wintertime activities. In this respect, some are definitely better than others in situations where you are required to move a lot or to handle various objects.

  • Fleece Gloves – These type of gloves are tightly knit to offer optimum warmth and comfort. However, fleece gloves are fairly thicker than others and do not allow proper flexibility of the fingers.
  • Lined Gloves – Thinner than fleece gloves, these type of gloves are ideal for energy activities. Allowing better movement of your fingers, these gloves are well insulated and are usually resistant to wind and water.
  • Soft Shell Gloves – Light in weight and resistant to water, snow, and wind, soft shell gloves are the perfect choices for colder climates. Although not ideal for heavy-duty activities, these gloves are great for all-purpose utilization.
  • Insulated Gloves – Designed with multiple layers, these gloves offer optimum warmth and comfort due to its special lock-in technology. The outer layer of this type of glove is mostly water-resistant along with the inner lining – helping to keep the moisture out and allowing optimal breathability.

Choosing the Best Winter Gloves

  • Material – Choosing the right material depends on the kind of activity you are purchasing the gloves for. Leather gloves, for example, are stylish and classy but are not meant for outdoor activities. Synthetic, heavy duty gloves with extra lining and added texture on the fingers, on the other hand, are more of an outdoor type of glove.
  • Water Resistance and Insulation – It is necessary to choose a glove that is waterproof if you experience wet snow conditions. Insulated gloves are the best choice if you are looking for gloves to keep your hands warm, comfortable and moisture free. For those living in very cold weather conditions, a good waterproof, insulated pair of gloves is definitely a better choice.
  • Removable Lining – If you are looking for gloves that allow you to adjust the level of warmth then a glove with a removable lining is a good option. On days when you experience extremely cold weather conditions, you can keep the insulated lining in, to help you keep warm and protect your hands.
  • Grip – Gloves that provide a good grip are definitely a better choice for you, especially if you are outside in the cold and need to pick up or move items around. Gloves with leather palms or inserts or those designed with anti-skid fingertips and palm areas offer a more secure hold than traditional winter gloves, which is definitely something you need to consider if your daily routine involves performing manual tasks outside during the day.
  • Touchscreen Compatibility – Many modern gloves are designed with relatively new touch-screen compatibility that allows you to use your smartphone while wearing your gloves. This enables you to click images and answer calls without taking off your gloves to feel the biting cold on your fingertips. Some winter gloves come with capped tips that allow texting as well.
