10 Best Rfid Wallet Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Some researches have claimed that RFID wallets aren’t simply necessary and that hackers simply don’t care about the credit cards in your wallet.  They further state that you can accomplish the same effect of an RFID wallet by simply wrapping your credit cards up in aluminum foil.  I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to be doing in front of friends or family members is embarrassingly unwrapping my credit cards from their noisy tin foil shell while I am out at a nice restaurant.

EMV, RFID, NFC, what’s the difference?

First, it’s a good idea to get a grasp of certain basic credit card terminology before we proceed any further. You’ve probably heard about three main technologies used in modern credit cards, namely EMV, RFID, and NFC.

Speaking of EMV cards, these are smart or chip cards that store data on integrated circuits in addition to magnetic stripes. Using EMV, you no longer have to swipe your card but insert it directly into the reader. EMV cards can also incorporate contactless technology for the data to be read over a short distance using NFC, or near-field communication technology.

NFC is a combination of communication protocols that enable communication between two devices (one of which is usually a smartphone) with a distance range of 1.6 inches. NFC uses radio waves to transmit information, much like RFID, or radio frequency identification technology, which is a grandfather of NFC.

RFID is actually a generic term that is used to identify long-range communication that’s used in an array of circumstances and devices, including highway toll payment, employee identification badges in offices, airport baggage tracking, etc.

RFID, RFID scanners, RFID skimming explained

You’ve probably seen videos, where someone using a remote-looking device was able to obtain critical credit card information that they later supposedly used for illegal activities.

RFID skimming has a lot of advantages for the criminal: they don’t have to figure out how to hack databases, have the substantial computer knowledge to obtain credit card information from e-commerce websites; profound technical expertise or be a part of a criminal team to hack ATMs. So, all they have to do is buy an RFID scanner and have a little bit of dexterity and aptness to fool a victim.

RFID-blocking technology: what’s an RFID wallet and how it works

Ten years ago, recognizing the aforementioned challenges, Augustinowicz, a businessman with a technology background, started a company called Identity Stronghold, which pioneered RFID-blocking technology and products intended to help consumers protect their vulnerable information. RFID-blocking technology works by stopping the wireless signal from being transmitted. There’s usually a protective sheath within the wallet (or bag, or even jeans) that automatically blocks the wireless signal.

BEFORE YOU BUY: 4 THINGS TO CONSIDER

Choosing an RFID-blocking wallet that best suits your purposes is a lot like buying a regular wallet. That is, some things – such as carrying capacity and ease of access – remain important whether a wallet offers RFID protection or not.

1. RFID, OR NOT

Let’s get obvious out of the way and say that, if you’re looking for an RFID wallet, then it makes sure that it has the technology. OK, that’s about as straightforward as is gets, but the last thing you want to do is find out that your wallet offers no protection at all.

2. STYLE

RFID wallets come in a variety of styles, just like regular wallets, and what style you choose depends on how you use it, among other things. For instance, if you typically carry your wallet in your front pants pocket, then one with a minimalist or slim design is your best bet. But there are also RFID wallets in traditional bifold and trifold designs.

3. CARRYING CAPACITY

A wallet’s style also includes its carrying capacity, i.e., how much stuff you can, and want, to jam in it. If you like to carry a lot of cash, a larger wallet, such as a bifold or trifold design or one with a zippered pocket, is a good option. But if you don’t carry a lot beyond your identification and a few credit cards, then a slim wallet may be more to your liking.

  • The classic bifold remains one of the most popular choices among men because, in part, they’re easy to access. You just lift the wallet’s flap and you’ll have everything you need in front of you.
  • A trifold generally include a multitude of compartments, which helps make it useful to men who carry a lot of cards (and cash). Don’t stuff your trifold to full, however, because sitting on it for long periods can become a literal pain in the ass.

4. EASE OF ACCESS

No man wants a wallet that makes it a chore to access the things you need the most, such as your ID or certain credit cards. It’s important to evaluate how easy it is to remove those items, as well as cash. Also, think about how often you access your wallet and potentially expose your cash, cards, and ID to people who may be around you, including strangers.
