Guide to buying Bluetooth speakers in 2019

Ideally, do not base your purchase decision on the specifications only, but they are a good starting point, especially if you cannot try the speaker yourself. In this way, they will help you find the best Bluetooth speakers in value for money.

Frequency response

The frequency response is measured in Hertz and is usually described as a range (for example, 100 Hz – 20,000 Hz). In theory, the wider the range, the better the speaker’s ability to play audio as intended.

However, having a wide range alone does not guarantee a good sound, since that also depends on how your ears perceive the sound, which can vary widely between people. We must also take into account other factors such as the age of the listener, since our ability to hear certain frequencies decreases over time.

In an audio track, the bass is usually heard around the frequency range between 20 Hz and 250 Hz. Voices and other instruments such as a guitar and piano are usually in the range from 250 Hz to 4,000 Hz (or 4 kHz), which is usually called the midrange. The rest of the frequencies (up to 20,000 Hz) form the treble.

Bluetooth version

The Bluetooth version determines the quality of the audio stream and the distance you can keep between your phone and the speaker. Ideally, look for speakers compatible with Bluetooth 4 or higher, since this version adds support for a low-energy profile, to achieve a longer battery life and a range of around 60 meters. Bluetooth 5 is the latest standard, which greatly improves the speed and range of data transmission, although there is still time before we see speakers that adopt it.

Controllers

The controller (or driver) is the heart of any speaker, so it is imperative that you get one that has a decent-sized controller. Most portable speakers usually have a 40 mm driver, which is a good size to start with If you want bigger drivers, then keep in mind that the overall speaker size will increase as well. For example, the Sony SRS-XB40 boasts two twin 61-millimeter controllers and is capable of producing truly powerful sound.

The number of controllers and their location also make a difference as to how the speaker will sound. Smaller Bluetooth speakers usually include a single full-range controller and are positioned facing up or down to better divert the sound.

On the other hand, many speakers have a twin controller configuration, which tends to be noticeably more powerful. As there is not much space inside a Bluetooth speaker for a bass driver (or woofer ), most manufacturers install passive radiators, which vibrate to produce the bass. If you use a lot of music devices to listen to rock and electronics, then having passive radiators like the JBL Flip 4 is very helpful.

Connectivity

Apart from wireless connectivity, it is good to have the additional option of a wired connection, so check that the speaker has an auxiliary connector. This is usually indicated as “Aux-In” on the speaker specification page.

A wired connection is useful if you want to save a lot of battery on your phone or speaker, and sometimes it also helps to achieve better sound quality. Many speakers also have NFC, which helps to quickly pair your devices. On the other hand, a microphone is also a good feature to have, as it allows you to answer calls directly through the speaker.

Loading method

Having a standard USB charging port is an added advantage, especially when you are outside or at a friend’s house and do not carry the cable with you. Today, most speakers still use a Micro-USB port, which makes it possible to charge them with external batteries as well, in case you’re away from an outlet.
