How do curlers work?
First, science: The keratin of the hair is held together by molecular bonds of hydrogen, which can be modified temporarily by the application of heat and moisture. The curlers come in a special base that connects to a plug to heat them. Once they are heated, small sections of hair are wrapped around the hot curlers and fixed in place using the clips or pins provided. Wait for the curlers to cool – about 15 minutes – then remove them from your hair. Due to the heat and humidity of the rollers, the hair will curl.
What to look for when buying curlers
The curlers come in two finishes: ribbed or flocked. Corrugated hot curlers have small ridges, while flocked hot curlers have a velvety surface. Some users prefer ribbed curlers because they are easier to remove from hair. Flocked curlers help keep hair in place and are especially good for creating large curls.
The curlers come in different sizes for different types of curls. Some games contain a variety of different sizes, and others have only one size. The little ones make tighter and ring-shaped curls. The larger ones make curls or large waves, in addition to creating more volume at the root.
Remember that the length of your hair also influences the result of the curls. If you put a large curl in the short hair, you can end with an inward or outward movement, instead of full curls, because your hair is too short to wrap the hot roller enough times.
Some rollers have variable heat settings, while others only heat at a preset temperature. For many people, hot rollers without variable heat settings work perfectly well. However, if you have particularly fine hair, you may need a lower heat setting to avoid damage and to get the best results.
The body of the curl can be made of one of several materials, all of which have different properties.
Foam curlers, surrounded by steam, tend to be wetter and can give you more durable curls. They also warm up especially quickly, so they are the best option if you like to comb in a hurry.
Wax core curlers
These curlers have a layer of wax in the center, which retains heat well and can help maintain a longer curl in the hair that is normally resistant to curling.
Ceramic infusion curlers
Ceramic curlers emit infrared heat ions, which helps reduce frizz and provides soft, shiny curls.
