Keys when buying a mattress:

As general rules, experts consider that:

– Soft mattresses are not recommended for heavy people.

– Not even the hard ones for those who sleep on their side …

– If you pass heat easily, the springs are cooler.

– But if you’re cold, the foams are better.

– If you move a lot, it is preferable that the mattress is not deformed too much.

– And if you are allergic, latex is recommended.

But aside from these general statements, the important thing is the feelings of each one: that we really dedicate time to the choice of the mattress, and that we read what the experts say, that it will always be a good clue to help us make the best purchase.

The questions that we must take into account are:

Size:

The first and easiest decision are the measures. We must start by knowing that if we do not opt for a standard size we run the risk of going crazy looking for sheets that fit. And although now, thanks to the Internet, we can find everything, sheets with sizes other than ‘always’ are noticeably more expensive.

In case anyone does not know, the standard sizes of the individual mattresses are between 90 and 110cm (80cm have been banished before). And those of marriage range from 135cm to 160cm wide.

Now (although they are not yet standard) the size of 180 × 200 is becoming fashionable, which is a good idea if there are no problems of space in the room, and we could even bet on the King size (200x200cm).

Firmness:

The firmness of the mattresses has three degrees: soft, medium and firm. The one we choose should be linked above all to the weight of the person and posture. As a general rule, a person with a lot of weight should opt for firmer mattresses to achieve greater body support.

On the contrary, smaller people or those who weigh little should choose mattresses that adapt to their shape with greater flexibility in order to distribute their weight better. Another variable that will affect the choice of the degree of firmness is the sleeping posture. And these are the general rules that experts handle:

• If you sleep on your back: it is better to go to the firmer mattresses. In this way, we avoid lumbar tension.

• If you sleep on your side: medium firmness is recommended so that the body does not sink, but it adapts to the shoulder and hip. The general maxim is that the spine should always remain, let’s take the posture we take, as straight as possible.

• If you sleep on your stomach: the more the mattress adapts to the shape of the body, the better. That is why mattresses of medium or low firmness are recommended.

Materials:

As for the mattress material, there are several models with very different properties and very different prices.

The most used are:

• Spring mattresses: The favorite for the double beds for the independence they offer since they do not transmit movement from one side of the mattress to the other.

Nowadays, with the quality that good brands use in the manufacture of this type of mattresses, it could be said that they are also the most suitable for people who spend heat at night since they allow air to circulate more easily than in Foam mattresses.

• Foam mattresses: They also do not transmit movement, keep heat well and are easy to handle. Within the foam mattresses, we find a great variety: from the most basic synthetics to the viscoelastic. Foams are recommended for those asthmatic or allergic to dust. And they are recommended in densities greater than 35kg / m3 for adults, especially if it is the usual bed.

In this mattress segment we can find:

Viscoelastic: It is a synthetic material developed by NASA in the space race of the 60s. It was invented to relieve the pressure that the tissues produced on the astronaut’s body during takeoff, and ended up being commercialized in the 90s.

In the beginning, a hole was made in the world of prostheses and adaptable mattresses for patients who spend a lot of time in bed, and today their use at rest is popularized.

• Latex mattresses: It is the most flexible material, ideal for people who move a lot when sleeping. They have great elasticity, adapt to our body and, when moving, quickly recover their original shape. They also absorb movement very well, so it is also a good option for double mattresses.
