10 Best Meat Slicer Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

It is no longer simply a matter of having the machine do the “dirty work” for us but of the savings that it is for both hoteliers and families to buy food for parts instead of slicing it. However, despite the fact that the meat slicer is an article of extended use, it may be that when purchasing one we may have certain doubts. In that line, in Hostelbar we believe that it is necessary to have several things in mind before contacting our catering machinery supplier.

What use are we going to give it?

At this point, the different ranges of manufacturers will give us some clues. The first big differentiation is whether the use is going to be domestic or professional. Of course, in the second case, the machine must have industrial type features: larger size, power, robustness, power transmission as well as chassis and mobile elements prepared for intensive use.

Is power important?

Possibly the most important factor. Do not forget that the cutting process is based on a motor that transmits the rotational force to a disk that makes the cut. In that sense, the power of the slicer defines the ability to cut the different types of food without suffering tension or fatigue, which in the long run can be very damaging and even cause engine damage due to overheating. Usually, for the home, we have enough with a meat slicer between 100 and 150 watts. As for professional or industrial use, the specifications and recommendations of the manufacturer or seller must be taken into account, in order to find a machine that does not suffer under nominal conditions during the cutting process.

The type of cutting disc

In the same way as the power, the cutting disc will also decide the type and size of the food to be cut. In this aspect, we have two predominant options: smooth or toothed disc. The first serves to cut soft foods such as sausages, vegetables, cheeses, and other cold cuts; In the case of the serrated or saw blade, it will be useful for cutting harder foods such as meat, slices of bread, cured sausages and others. Depending on the needs we can always acquire a model of meat slicer that includes both types of the disc to be able to change them according to the type of food to be cut.

Disk size

Once we have the type of disc it is time to choose what its size should be. This one has trivial importance since it will decide the size of the pieces that we can cut which by extension determines the size and power of the machine. Typically, different manufacturers use disk size to name different models within different ranges of cutters. To have a reference, the size of the disc can range between 15 and 40 centimeters in the different commercial cutters.

By gravity or vertical?

This differentiation is based on the construction characteristics of the machine. In gravity slicers, the cutting plane in which the food is placed has a negative slope that serves to facilitate the pressure between the food and the cutting disc. These machines are useful for sausages, hams and similar cold cuts. On the other hand, in the case of vertical cutters, a 90º angle is established between the cutting disc and the food, so that the cutting products fall more easily. These types of models are recommended for cutting raw or cooked meats since being softer they can get stuck and/or cut more irregularly in the gravity slicer.

Belt or gears?

In belt cutters, the power transmission is produced by means of a tension distribution belt. This type of machines are less resistant since belt drive is more sensitive to jams and power losses, which reduces its robustness and precision, but they are also usually cheaper. In the case of the gear transmission system, it has a metal structure that transmits the engine power, which minimizes vibrations and power losses. This type of slicer is usually used for harder sausages and hams and its benefits make them suitable for intensive uses such as in sausage industries, deli, large kitchens, etc.

Other options to consider

Other elements to consider can be the safety features offered by the machine such as anti-jamming switches, mechanical protection elements, etc. On the other hand, some models incorporate vacuum packaging machines to optimize the cutting-packaging process or knife sharpeners that facilitate the maintenance of the cutting blade. In addition, another element to take into account is the mobility system of the bench, which for example can be by bearings, giving it the necessary stability so that the cut is precise and safe.
