How to choose your notebook computers?

day, it is almost imperative that a student holds a laptop PC regardless of the school level (take notes, access certain courses, workgroups) or in his private life (social networks, movies, play …). But given a large number of models in the market, how to find the right one? Here are some criteria to examine before purchase.

The weight

This may seem bland, but the weight of your computer is not a factor that should be taken lightly. You have to take it from class to class, or by train, bus, and it will surely take you to the back. Beyond 2 kg, the weight begins to “feel”, therefore, I recommend not exceeding this limit if you do not want to feel discomfort or discomfort.

Screen size

The issue of screen size is obviously related to the weight and portability of the computer. A 15 or 17 ”Full HD screen is obviously nice to watch movies or play, but when you have to put it in a backpack or bag, it’s not that fun.

11 ”is great for transportation. You can almost put it in any bag. But if it is your only computer, you will feel limited. On the one hand, the taking of notes is usually less ergonomic, due to its small keyboard, and if you want to watch a television series at night, the screen size can repel it quite quickly.

The autonomy

The question of autonomy is also very important if you want to make your computer a real work tool. At present, most universities are equipped to provide a network connection, having this, you just need to have good autonomy.

In large amphitheaters, there are not always plugs, and if for some reason you do not have much battery at a time of such caliber, it can be a disaster. That is why you have to choose a model that has sufficient autonomy that allows you to sit anywhere in the class, without having to be looking for a plug and without losing an apex of the course.

Internal memory

Of course, with the scope of online solutions and the multiplication of Cloud systems today, the issue of a computer’s internal memory becomes less dramatic. However, it is important to invest in a capacity that meets your needs.

So if you have to process heavy files for your classes, like to watch movies, or play, your memory space can quickly become saturated. Currently, a minimum of 500 GB hard drive is generally recommended.

Note that, increasingly, laptops have SSD hard drives. They have the advantage over traditional HDDs because they are faster, but they are also more expensive and quickly raise the price of the computer. Unless you are a player or a graphic designer, this system is unlikely to be useful.

Windows

Windows PCs are undoubtedly the best known and widespread in the student field. Although it is usually a matter of money: in front of a Mac, we already know which one is cheaper. But often, it is a matter of compatibility. Since Windows is the most common personal computers, it is very likely that you will have more facility to share your files and programs with others.

However, they also have some disadvantages, because, in my opinion, they are also not very optimal for a student: the battery is often smaller (Windows consumes a lot at this level) and they are more quickly affected by slow problems when opening several pages web, are subject to virus problems, and tend to get warm after long use.

Chrome OS

Here I present the type of laptop that I recommend most for students. This type of computer has significantly increased the number of sales in recent years, even to the point of exceeding those of the Macs in the US. And since they exist relatively recently and are not yet well known in the Spanish market, they may not even know them. It’s about Chromebooks.

It is not surprising that their sales have increased in the United States since the sector where Chromebooks have decided to invest is precisely that of teaching. This to the point, that more and more educational institutions are automatically equipped with their computers.

The price

The price is one of the main advantages of Chromebooks, which make it particularly interesting for students. Since manufacturers do not have to pay licenses to integrate Chrome OS into their computers, they do not need to compensate for this cost by paying the consumer.

Therefore, it is possible to find Chromebooks at fairly low prices, without their quality being affected. In fact, in my selection, among the best mid-range, I present some Chromebooks that are authentic high-end machines.

Material quality

Another highlight of the Chromebook is its material quality. Unlike the entry-level Windows PCs, where manufacturers are forced to make significant sacrifices to lower the price, Chromebooks almost always have excellent material quality: case, screen, keyboard, touchpad, front camera, speakers, All solid and functional.

And above all (and that is why students feel really interested), they are usually lighter and thinner than Windows computers, and their battery is very efficient (it is possible to use a Chromebook connected to the internet for 8-12 hours without having to recharge it).

The speed

Thanks to the optimizations of Chrome OS and the requirements that Google imposes on manufacturers, Chromebooks have impressive speed.

When you browse the web with a Chromebook, everything is quick and easy. Pages load instantly, sites and applications launch quickly and everything is simple, like the Google Chrome browser. In addition, Chromebooks start-up less than 6 seconds and the exit from standby mode is instantaneous. By the time he reaches the chair, he is ready.

Safety

The last advantage of Chromebooks is their great security. With the foolproof firewall that Chrome OS offers, you don’t need to install an antivirus.

In addition, Chromebooks are updated automatically every six weeks, with the latest performance and security improvements. Unlike many computers where performance decreases over time, Chromebooks tend to be faster and more secure.

In addition to these four advantages, there are two points that must be taken into account, which can constitute both an advantage and a disadvantage, and which, therefore, must weigh on the balance before making your choice.
