What are protection services against identity theft?

Many companies describe their services as protection services against identity theft. In reality, there is no service that can protect you against the theft of your personal information. What these companies offer are monitoring and recovery services. The monitoring services watch for signs that might indicate that a thief is using your personal information. The recovery services help you cope with the effects of identity theft after it occurs.

Monitoring services

There are two basic types of monitoring services – credit monitoring and identity monitoring.

Credit monitoring

The credit monitoring service tracks the activity that is recorded on your credit report with one, two or all three major credit reporting companies (CRAs) – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. If in your report you detect any activity that could be the result of identity theft or error, you can take steps to resolve the problem before it gets worse. Usually, the credit monitoring service will notify you in the following situations:

  • When a company verifies your credit history.
  • When a new loan or credit card account is opened under your name.
  • When a creditor or debt collector reports that you are late with a payment.
  • When it is indicated in the public records that you filed a bankruptcy declaration.
  • When there is a legal ruling against you.
  • When your credit limits change.
  • When any change is made to your personal data, for example, change of name, address or telephone number.

Credit monitoring only warns you about the activity on your credit report. But there are several types of identity theft that will not appear in your report. For example, the credit monitoring service will not inform you if an identity thief withdraws money from your bank account or if you use your Social Security number to file a tax return and collect your tax refund.

Questions for credit monitoring service providers:

  • What are the credit reporting companies that monitor?
  • How often do you monitor the reports of credit reporting companies? Some services do it daily, others less frequently.
  • What type of access will I have to my credit reports? Can I see my reports from the three credit reporting companies? Is there a limit to how often I can see my reports? Will I be charged a separate charge every time I see a report?
  • Are other services included, such as access to my credit score?

Identity monitoring

The identity monitoring service notifies you when someone is using your information – such as your bank account information or your Social Security number, driver’s license, passport or medical information identification number – in a way that is not usually listed on Your credit report, For example, identity monitoring services can notify you when your information appears in:

  • A request to change the address.
  • Judicial or arrest records.
  • The request for a new public service, cable TV or cell phone.
  • Payday loan applications.
  • Presenting checks for cash collection.
  • Social media.
  • The websites that identity thieves use to exchange stolen information.

To find out if someone is using your information improperly, identity monitoring services should check the databases that collect different types of information to verify if these databases contain new or erroneous information under their name. For example, the service could check the National Database of Change of Address to verify if someone is trying to divert their correspondence to another address.

Questions for identity monitoring service providers:

  • What types of information do you verify and how often? For example, does the service check databases containing payday loan applications to see if someone is misusing your information to obtain a loan?
  • What personal information do you need and how will you use my information?
  • Does the identity monitoring service also include other services? Do they have an extra cost?

Identity recovery services

Identity recovery services are designed to help you regain control of your good name and finances after identity theft. Typically, this service is provided by trained counselors or case managers who guide you through the process of resolving problems caused by identity theft. They can help you write letters addressed to creditors or debt collectors, place a freeze or lock on your credit report to prevent an identity thief from opening new accounts under your name, or they can guide you about the documents you should review.

Insurance against identity theft

Most identity theft protection services offer insurance against identity theft. Typically, insurance covers only out-of-pocket expenses directly related to the recovery of your identity. Commonly, these expenses are limited to the costs of postage, copies and notary fees. Less frequently, they could cover lost wages or legal fees. Insurance generally does not reimburse lost money or financial losses resulting from theft.

Alternatives to commercial identity theft protection services

These are some free or low-cost ways to protect against identity theft.

  • Monitor your credit reports for free. Federal law states that, upon request, each of the major credit reporting companies must give you a free copy of your credit report per year. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com – the only authorized website to request credit reports. If you want to monitor your reports throughout the year, you can stagger your orders in order to receive a free report every four months.
  • Check your bank account summaries, credit card accounts, withdrawal, investments, and other accounts every month. Or access your accounts online and check them more frequently. This allows you to detect signs of fraudulent charges in your accounts long before problems appear on your credit report.
